A chainsaw helmet is three pieces of kit in one: a hard hat for falling branches, a visor for chips, and ear defence for a tool that runs at around 100 dB. Buying them as a combination set is cheaper and means they actually fit together.

Mesh or clear visor
Mesh is standard for chainsaw work: it does not fog, does not scratch, and lets sawdust through rather than building up. It will not stop fine dust or liquid, which is why brushcutter users often prefer clear. For sawing, mesh is the right default, with safety glasses underneath if you are sensitive to fine chips.
Ear defence
Look at the SNR rating. A petrol saw sits around 100 to 115 dB at the ear, so defenders in the high twenties SNR bring it to a safe level. Electric saws are quieter but still past the point where a long session does damage.
Helmets expire
The shell is date stamped, usually inside the brim, and has a service life of about five years from first use regardless of how it looks. UV and impacts both degrade it. Replace immediately after any significant impact, even with no visible crack, and be wary of second hand helmets for exactly this reason.
Fit
The harness should hold the shell clear of your skull, the visor should clear your nose when raised, and the defenders should seal all the way round without pressing on glasses arms. A helmet that is uncomfortable is a helmet that ends up on the ground.
