EGO built its reputation on one idea: a 56V battery platform designed for garden machinery from the start, rather than a drill battery pressed into service. The result is cordless mowers and saws that behave much more like petrol machines than most battery kit.
Our file on EGO is thin: Ego Machine Body Chainsaw 40CM CS1600E 030403, a 40 cm saw which is no longer stocked by the retailers we track, so its page points to a current equivalent. The guidance below is about the platform rather than a shopping list, and the alternatives are linked at the end.
What we hold on EGO
The 56V Arc Lithium platform
EGO's packs are 56V, higher than almost anything else sold for domestic garden use, and they are air-cooled with a distinctive arc shape. The practical effect on a chainsaw is torque: a 56V saw holds chain speed in a cut where lower-voltage saws start to bog, which is what makes them feel closer to petrol.
The same packs run EGO mowers, blowers, trimmers and hedge cutters, so the platform makes most sense if you are replacing several petrol machines rather than buying one saw. Batteries are not cheap, and they do not interchange with any other brand.
How EGO compares
Against 18V saws from tool brands, EGO is a different class: longer bars, more torque, more weight. Against Greenworks 60V and 80V, the two are broadly comparable, and the choice usually comes down to which other garden tools you want on the same battery.
Against petrol, a 56V saw will match a small to mid-size petrol saw for short bursts but not for a full day of felling, which is the same honest limit that applies to every battery saw.
What to look at instead
Since our EGO listing is out of stock, the nearest current equivalents are in the cordless range: the larger Greenworks 60V and 80V saws, the 40V XGT models from Makita, or the battery saws from Stihl if you want dealer support behind the machine.
EGO chainsaw FAQs
Are EGO chainsaws as good as petrol?
For short bursts, a 56V EGO saw performs much like a small to mid-size petrol saw: it holds chain speed in the cut and has a long enough bar for real work. What it cannot do is run all day without several charged packs. For garden work and light firewood that is rarely a problem; for sustained felling, petrol still wins.
Do EGO batteries fit other brands?
No. The 56V Arc Lithium pack is specific to EGO tools and does not interchange with any other manufacturer. The upside is that it fits every EGO tool, so the platform is worth buying into if you plan to replace a mower and trimmer as well as a saw.
Why is the EGO chainsaw here marked discontinued?
Because the listing we tracked is no longer in stock at the retailers we check. The review stays up for anyone researching a saw they already own or are buying used, with a note pointing to a comparable current model rather than a buy button that goes nowhere.
Does an EGO chainsaw need bar oil?
Yes, like every chainsaw. There is no fuel or engine oil, but the bar and chain oil reservoir must be kept filled with ordinary bar and chain oil, and checked each time you change a battery. Running the chain dry will ruin the bar and stretch the chain within a session.
